The Challenge

Hanalei Surf School is run by pro surfer Evan Valerie on the North Shore of Kauai. Evan wanted to simply increase the number of bookings so that he could hire more instructors and scale his business. An obviously large tourism market, but also saturated with things to do and other surf lesson providers, we needed to efficiently run ads on a low budget that would still convert.

The Solution

Initially, we thought that many tourists would be waiting to book something like surf lessons until they were in Hawaii, or would consider it an afterthought, so we started with a Facebook ads campaign to target people nearby as they were scrolling. However, we didn’t like the results. As part of our method of experimenting, we reallocated the budget to Google ads to capture those who were actively searching for surf lessons.

The Results

In the first six weeks, Google ads accounted for 36 new bookings for $4,798 revenue on $418 adspend, a 15x ROI.

Over the course of nine months from April-December, we saw 293 bookings for $56,442 revenue on a $2,746 adspend, a 21x ROI.
